Child of the Stars
Driiiiiing!
It was lunch time! My friends and I could already smell our favorite food from way up here: it was pasta! We ran down to the cafeteria.
I noticed a new guy at our cafeteria today. He seemed different. He did not talk at all when he gave me the food. He was also very tall and had no reaction. Other teachers would ask if we wanted more, but he seemed shy.
It was time to go home. In the car, I told my mom, “Mommy, today at school there was this guy. He doesn’t talk or smile that much.”
My mom answered, “Honey, that guy’s name is Kabeer. He is your English teacher’s son.”
“oh, but why doesn’t he communicate with people? ”I asked.
“Sweetie, it’s because he’s a child of the stars.”
“Child of the stars?” I asked.
“ Yes,” my mommy said. Then she started to explain. Kabeer is an person with autism on the spectrum. It is hard for him to communicate with other people. He feels lonely like he lives in his own little world.” After my mom added that he also needs a lot of love and help to communicate. When I heard that I felt bad for him.
The next day……
“Today I’m gonna talk to Kabeer,” I said to myself.
I went to the cafeteria, planning to talk to him when he served me, but he wasn’t here, I was disappointed. But when I went to my lockers to get my jacket, I saw Kabeer was there!
I said immediately, “Hi I’m Amirah!”
Then I handed him a candy. He hesitated for two seconds, then he took the candy. He said in a soft mumbling voice, “Hi.” Then he left.
The next day I saw him at the lockers again. This time he was much less shy. He said, “Hi Amirah ,what’s your favorite food?”
I was shocked that he wasn’t shy.
“Sushi! ” I said.
Day by day, I got to know him more and then finally I got him to crack a smile. I told my friends about Kabeer that he needed our love and support. My friends also did the same as me: we talked to him, we tried to make him laugh, we prepared little candies for him……
Kabeer now knew all our names. We loved to talk to him and getting him to laugh.
On the last day of school, Kabeer gave me a box of Sushi. I told my mom, “ Mommy, today I had the best Sushi of my life!” Mom laughed.
